Figuring out Learning Design: what's the purpose?
During some in-school professional development task I discovered that I had a lack of knowledge about what "learning design" really was. I then noticed that there were multiple articles about Learning Design so I decided to explore what was out there. After reading notes on a Modern Learners podcast, one of the comments lead me to an book called "Purpose Rising: A Global Movement of Transformation and Meaning". I only accessed one chapter by Paul Cook-Deegan.
"The journey toward feeling purposeful can be painful"
(Cook-Deegan, 2017, p. 242)
Shifting to purpose "what's important to you?"
Cook-Deegan (2017) references The Path to purpose by Dr. William Damon (2008) and the path to purpose is defined as “a stable and generalized intention to accomplish something that is at the same time meaningful to the self and consequential for the world beyond the self.”
In a podcast Damon (2018) discusses "The Path to Purpose: Helping Our Children Find Their Calling in Life" https://www.scottbarrykaufman.com/podcast/path-purpose-william-damon
Damon (2018) discusses long term purpose, ownership, not just about the self.
Core Values?
Purpose requires commitment so this comes from integrity.
Meaning vs Purpose?
Damon (2018) also discusses the Positive Psychology Movement by Victor Frankl.
Meaning is a component of purpose but it's deeper than that.
Life long journey to be fully purposeful.
Damon (2018) discusses Positive youth development by Carol Ryff http://livingmeanings.com/six-criteria-well-ryffs-multidimensional-model/
Damon (2018) says we are just starting to measure purpose and find evidence of it? e.g. using Interviews? Surveys? Mike Steger? New area of research. Resilience - grit, mental health, capacity to recover, concept only takes you part way there. Challenge or difficulty to overcome, but not recovery e.g. Frakl More about aspire! Positive aspect of it! Purpose is expressed differently youth vs adult - depends on context - school or part time job. Purpose is expressed in this context (e.g. academic, sport, family). 30 year old, new career, responsibility, raising family etc. Different lives, where they spend their time. Purposefully in their future life e.g. developmental capacity. Show-off vs maturity? Youth - habit or virtue of humility. "Future Project" -dream directors (guidance counselors in schools) Healthy ambition but being realistic. Poor attendance, depression, anxiety, disengagement. https://www.thefutureproject.org/
Michael Steger "In pursuit of a meaningful life' at Mind & Its Potential 2013" https://youtu.be/fWLHMDTSCTY
Damon breaks youth into four distinct groups: dabblers, disengaged, dreamers, and purposeful.
How can we expect young people to find a purpose if we don’t give them encouragement and meaningful opportunities to explore what that might be during the pivotal years of adolescence and high school? p. 244
disengaged students see no reason to find a purpose, or are simply never offered experiences that ignite their desire to craft a purposeful life p. 245
a problem in the world they care about, discovering something they love to do, and identifying the things they’re good at or skills they want to acquire.
Purpose involves thinking of others
"Purpose isn't drive or achievement" Purpose is intrinsic.
Wayfinding - craft a vision. "Visions take time to seed and germinate—you can’t
force them." (p. 251)
To help young people figure out what they care about, two things
need to happen. We need to expose students to many different kinds of
things they may care about while simultaneously helping them develop
in-depth self-awareness in an iterative, cyclical process between the internal
and external, new experiences and reflection, and integration of those
learning experiences that translates into action. (p.253)
We can never tell a young person
what they should do, but we can equip them with the internal and external
skills, mind-sets, and behaviors, to figure it out on their own, with the support
of strong mentorship and guidance (p. 258)
